Don’t Let the Bastards Grind You Down: 50 Things Every Alcoholic and Addict in Early Recovery Should Know, or How to Stay Clean and Sober, Recovery from Addiction and Substance Abuse
“No matter what happens, you don’t have to pick up a drink or drug today.” These words tend to strike fear in the hearts of many alcoholics and addicts who are new to recovery, because just one day without booze or drugs may as well be an eternity. It can seem like an impossible task to get through twenty-four hours, never mind a week or a month – so just how do we get that proverbial monkey off our backs? This book is full of suggestions that can work for anyone who is new to recovery or trying to get clean and sober again. The author has drawn on her own experiences and those of others in early recovery to determine the ‘Fifty Things Every Alcoholic and Addict Should Know,’ including: The First Thirty Days-What to expect and how to get through it……Things to Avoid-Protecting your recovery and coping with stress……Relapse-Warning signs and tools for moving forward again ……Family-How to include them and rebuild relationships……Dating in Recovery-The not so good, the bad and the ugly……Dry Drunk-How not to be one……Twelve Step Programs-How they work and what you should know. Believe it or not, it doesn’t matter how you got to this point in your life – the most important part is that you did. Too many alcoholics and addicts die from this disease before they get a chance to fight it. Just remember that you don’t have to do it alone. There are people who want to help, those who have been to the bottom and back and are now living a life without drugs and alcohol. All you need to have is the willingness to follow some simple suggestions that have worked

12 Stupid Things That Mess Up Recovery: Avoiding Relapse Through Self-Awareness and Right Action
Are you sabotaging your own recovery? To grow in recovery, we must grow up emotionally. This means getting honest with ourselves and facing up to the self-defeating thoughts and actions that put our sobriety at risk. Although there are as many ways to mess up recovery as there are alcoholics and addicts, some general themes exist, which include: • confusing self-concern with selfishness
• not making amends
• using the program to try to become perfect
• not getting help for relationship troubles
• believing that life should be easy In simple, down-to-earth language, Allen Berger explores the twelve most commonly confronted beliefs and attitudes that can sabotage recovery. He then provides tools for working through these problems in daily life. This useful guide offers fresh perspectives on how the process of change begins with basic self-awareness and a commitment to working a daily program.

12 Stupid Things That Mess Up Recovery: Avoiding Relapse Through Self-Awareness and Right Action Reviews

A well-written, user friendly book that allows both individuals who are new in recovery or who have been in recovery for years to focus on the issues that are truly important in recovery. Dr. Berger interlaces his own personal recovery experiences with the wisdom that he has gained as a clinician over many years and created a book that is sure to provide hope to many in recovery. Overall, an excellent book for individuals in recovery and for clinicians who seek to understand their clients more fully.

Relapse prevention is an often overlooked aspect of recovery. The alcoholic /addict in early sobriety is excited to be clean and sober, often riding the so-called ‘pink cloud’. This almost euphoric feeling can instill an over confidence and exuberance that may cause the addict to fail to recognize early signs of relapse. Without such awareness and hence preventative measures, relapse can creep up on the individual. By the time the signs are clearly evident, the relapse is in full effect. Relapse happens long before the drug, drink or behavior is picked up or acted upon.
Regardless of what stage of recovery you are in, this book can give you an awareness that might just save your life.

Willpower’s Not Enough: Recovering from Addictions of Every Kind
Many people think that what the addict needs is willpower, but nothing could be further from the truth: When a person has already lost control over a drug or activity, attempts to control its use almost never work. Because the source of addiction isn’t the drug or activity itself but a desire for a mood changer, successful recovery means ultimately changing the way we live, giving up the addictive life-style. Willpower’s Not Enough will show you how to change your life-style and to recover from your addiction.

Willpower’s Not Enough: Recovering from Addictions of Every Kind Reviews

I disagree with the last reviewer. This book offers an unusual, and highly useful, perspective on the causes and treatments of addiction. Typically, the goal of most self-help books on the subject is abstinence from use. The present book considers abstinence only the first step in the life-long process of addiction recovery. The book focuses on addictive behaviors and personality traits, how they originate, why they lead to addiction. It gave me terrific insight into why I can quit smoking, but then relapse after a few months. Highly recommended to any thinking person interested in understanding and recovering from their addiction.

This is a straight-forward, no BS, book about addiction and you don’t have to be a doctor to understand it. What it covers includes: addiction & the addictive personality defined, in detail; how folks tend to become addicted; things they tend to try to do about it that don’t work; thoughts/beliefs etc to watch out for that undermine recovery (and realistic ways to deal with them); things that DO work to help a person out of addictive thinking/behavior; and what the person in recovery can look forward to as a result of their efforts. It’s good not only for those addicted but for those dealing with an addicted loved one.
THERE IS HOPE IN THIS BOOK.
The authors seem to have heard, and can anticipate, every excuse for remaining addicted or relapsing, but they manage to just tell it like it is w/out scolding or being overly sympathetic. The addicted person comes away from this book understanding that he isn’t inherently bad after all but just in need of support and some new skills in dealing with life, which he learns are within his grasp. Get your life back — be brave and buy this book.

Addiction & Recovery for Dummies Reviews

The title of this series always turns me off–so formulaic and usually simplistic. But this book is different! The format is simple and the material is presented in the clear, crisp and easily readable style typical of this series but this book is also truly wise, practical and compassionate in its approach. There is up-to-date information on medications, the physiology of addiction, treatments and groups that can offer support to the addicted person and plenty of practical advice for those on the sidelines (family, friends, spouses) who want to help but don’t understand the problem. The book makes practical suggestions for treatments/groups that can help, how to deal with relapse cravings and moving forward in life without relying on an ultimately self-destructive habit. I have 30 years of experience as a therapist and this is one of the few selp-help books that I respect. I plan to give it to my clients and to recommend it to colleagues. Buy it—you won’t be disappointed!

I’ve been waiting years for this book! As a physician I see many patients with addiction problems, yet I’ve never had a truly “user-friendly” book to recommend to the average reader. Now I do! This book is easy to read, it’s concise, and it covers virtually all the important addiction topics in its well organized 20 chapters. The topics are covered in a sensitive, heart-felt manner while delivering critical information. It is obvious that Shaw, Ritvo, and Irvine know their topic and have empathy for clients and friends plagued by addictions. If you want to feel respected by the authors of the book you read, this is a good book. Even if you’re struggling with an addiction, yourself, I can’t imagine feeling ‘talked down’. As they say, addiction can happen to anyone – no matter how strong or strong-minded.

Mindful Recovery: A Spiritual Path to Healing from Addiction Reviews

Mindful recovery is a book that focuses on maintaining your abstinence from any addiction, once you have made the decision to quit: “…if you can build a happy, fulfilling, meaningful life, relapse will be much less of an issue.” It’s a flexible approach to recovery based on facing life with an attitude of acceptance, rather than running away from life through an addiction.I love how Thomas and Beverly Bien integrated the spiritual concepts of the East with the more scientific ideas found in psychology: “While our approach is rooted in Eastern traditions of mindfulness…The West has its own approaches to mindfulness. Journaling, narrative psychology, insight-oriented psychotherapy, relationship work, and dream analysis…we present a blend of Eastern and Western wisdom.” They also briefly touch upon the fallacy of black and white thinking, borrowed from cognitive styles of recovery. In ten “doorways,” this book presents many little essays that elaborate on these themes through quotes, personal stories, and practical applications. By the time you finish this book, you will have a full understanding of mindfulness and how to use it to free yourself from addiction.Mindful recovery, however, has a potential negative: the reader can easily become overwhelmed by the myriad of “Practices” the authors have developed to explore mindfulness in every capacity – work, relationships, dreams, and the like. The “Practices” seem to be endless. But the authors wisely predict this: “…having so many tools can also seem a little overwhelming – as though you had a lot of things to do and remember. It isn’t so. Whenever you feel this way…remind yourself that there is really only one thing to remember and it is the simplest thing of all: to be mindful, to be aware.” I also strongly agree with their paradigm of change. It’s a process of six stages, borrowed from James Prochaska and Carlo DiClemente, who co-authored Changing for Good. And it’s empowering, because their notion allows for relapse with a mentality of acceptance and learning: “…most people do go through these stages several times before establishing permanent change. For this reason, it is equally important to be able to view a slip…as a temporary setback rather than ultimate failure.” At the heart of this book are the practices of meditation and journaling. Regardless of how many Practices mentioned throughout the book, these two are definitely the twin pillars that support mindfulness. They are simple, flexible, and easy to implement in your life. I highly recommend this book. Just make sure to stay on course with the simplicity of mindfulness, and let your intuition guide you as to how to implement it into your life.

Mindful Recovery makes the breakthrough teachings of mindfulness accessible to those who struggle with addiction. It is an extremely wise and helpful book–clearly the best of its genre and written by authors who obviously know how to reach out to their audience. Mindful Recovery teaches the reader how to use meditation both on and off the cushion as the basis for a more fulfilling life–bringing calm awareness into work, relationships, and emotions. The only problem I have with the book is that its suggestions are equally helpful to those who do not struggle with addictions, yet the title and marketing do not target these broader audiences. This is a must read. As a surprisingly refreshing alternative to other approaches to addiction, I think it could easily become a classic in the field.
