Since America’s discovery, birth and infancy–spanning decades into today’s modern century, tobacco grew exponentially as quite the profitable addictive vice, with the blessings of our Government—an entity that thrived on growing $ $ $ $ much akin to an agricultural farmer with his crops.
But when many of the political empowered were NOT invited inside Big Tobacco’s profitable inner sanctum in the late 70s—hell hath no fury than a politician scorned. And so, the anti-smoking revolution began with impassioned fury, picking up liberal protest groups like the American Cancer Association—and even the son of the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco empire—as allies.
“It Takes A Village”–and The Clinton First Family also rallied behind the anti-smoking cause, passing Federal restricting tobacco sales practices and smoking ban upon smoking ban; the movement grew bolder each passing year—till it became a popular social trend that crossed party lines into the Republican camps. The Federal System became empowered by dangling juicy Federal Grant $ $ $ to financially beleaguered states, much like a farmer dangling a juicy carrot–teasing his hungry, but lazy donkey to get up and pull the heavy plow.
Republicans AND Democrats had their own dreamy goal : To use tobacco PRICE GOUGING excise tax increase profit$ for their respective camp agenda$ . Bush, Jr. got so unfocused with Halliburton’s profit$ from the Iraq War, that the Republicans dropped the ball—and the Democrats grabbed the fumble for the epic touchdown….ultimately gaining total GOVERNMENT CONTROL.
Obama wins the Presidency–a black man goes from servant houseboy to the “free” country leader of the United States of America; the Democrats still pinch themselves to prove they’re not dreaming!! And a very power hungry House Speaker Nancy Pelosi makes her historic move—and so the PRICE GOUGING tobacco excise tax increase bill is born…..as they all sit back and anticipate mega-TRILLION dollar profit$ , like children waiting for Santa’s Christmas arrival. OOps, dropped the PC–sorry—HOLIDAY arrival ( my bad ).
But Americans, disgusted with the failures of Republicans AND Democrats, joined tea parties—dumped their cigarettes, cigars and smokeless tobacco products into rivers—and made solid commitments to QUIT.
And THAT became Pelosi’s nightmare—for now, the SMOKING BANS, so favored for 20 years have wrecked the anticipated profit$ the Democrats prayed would fund “Obama-care”, the unrealistic health care “reform” bill.
And with this, leaves the lesson that perhaps, the United States should NOT have depended on tobacco to support it’s economy in the first place, so “civilized” man could wield and abuse it for political gain—leaving us commoner joe workers in the lurch as the clear losers…and America’s hard fought freedoms to fade into mere memory, as a new generation takes reign of a “new” America—far removed from the America we currently know.
