Question by : What age were you considered legally an adult in the 1940’s and 1950’s?
Did the term “Adult” even exist back then and the age of majority was it like 18 for females in some states and 21 for males.Did “Teenagers” exist back then also and what age were you officially an adult was it the age you could sign a contract which was 21?What was the drinking age?

Girls are considered adults after their maturity and boys after they get whiskers. Nowadays chronical maturity enters both sexes at very early age due to the influence of media.

The Growth of Teenagers as a Market Force in 1950’s Society-
Until 1950 the term teenagers had never before been coined. Children were known as girls and boys were known as youths once they displayed signs of puberty. Then young people were grown up at 18 and fully adult legally at 21 when they often married and set up a home of their own, even if it was a rented room. Getting married was a way of showing the adult world that you belonged to their world and was a way of escape from puberty.

According to the Kansas Dept of Revenue & Alcoholic Beverage Control, prohibition on alcoholic beverages from 1920 was nationwide and continued into the 30s when it was overturned, then each state had to vote to regulate and tax liquor. Prohibition on alcoholic beverages continued into the 1940s with essentially lipservice being played to enforcement. However, that was about to change! In 1946 the drinking age for alcoholic liquor was set at 21, while the drinking age for cereal malt beverage remained at 18. It is interesting to note that by 1949, forty-five of the forty-eight contiguous states had already legalized the sale of alcoholic liquor.
