The reason why it is important to narrow down what graduate degree you want is that you are devoting and investing in your time and your money in going to school to get a graduate degree. Your major does count, because of course the degree needs to be related to what and where you want to focus your career. You also want to take a look at the job market in your area, for various licensed professionals, to include Licensed Professional Counselors (masters in psychology), Marriage and Family Therapists (MMFT), and Licensed Clinical Social Workers (masters in social work). All of these graduate degrees require licensure supervision before you can even become licensed after you get your graduate degree. For my license in clinical social work, for example, I had to have two years of clinical supervision and had to pass the national ASWB clinical social work exam. So keep in mind, that even after getting a Masters degree in Psychology, you are not going to be able to do any “therapy” until you have completed licensure requirements. My state for LPC’s is also two years of clinical supervision as well.
And as a FYI, to be a high school counselor one has to earn a bachelors degree or masters degree in guidance counseling, which is different than a masters in psychology. The state board of education oversees the certification/licensure requirements for guidance counselors. Some states require teaching certification as well as experience teaching for those positions.
I would recommend figuring out what type of jobs you want first and then doing some online job searches and calling professionals to see what degree would make you the most marketable for what you want to do.
The Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) is an informative website which has a link to state licensure boards. You can get to the other mental health licensure requirements as well from the state licensure boards website. http://www.aswb.org
Also, each state in the U.S. is different for what type(s) of masters level of counselors/therapists are more likely to be hired, so you should do your homework there as well. Indeed is a good job search. http:///www.indeed.com
