Emotionally Focused Therapy and Solution Focused Brief Therapy?

Question by pinksmurf870: Emotionally Focused Therapy and Solution Focused Brief Therapy?
What are some things that are different and similar about these two kinds of Therapy?

Best answer:

Answer by Dr. Bob
Both are relatively brief therapies, lasting 6 to 20 sessions. “Brief therapy” is considered a general sub-set of psychotherapy in general, in that it stresses fewer sessions than “once a week forever…”

Like so much else in the field of psychology, brief therapy was pioneered by Dr. Alfred Adler in the 19-teens. Marital and family therapists often see clients in a short series of sessions, with a specific “presenting problem” being focus on.

EFT, on the other hand, is a specific counseling approach devised by two people ( Sue Johnson and Les Greenberg) in the early 1980s, based on attachment theory. It began as their own approach to marital therapy, and has since been used also in family therapy. It is short-term brief therapy.

The attachment theory on which they base their approach is not the same as the Belonging Theory of Dr. Alfred Adler (also in the 19-teens), but is based on bonding theory and for some years has been on the verge of being discredited, not so much for its theory and for its harsh forms of therapy with attachment-disordered children and youth.
