Teenage Drinking?

Question by The Original Cosnipa: Teenage Drinking?
I’m 17, I like to drink with my friends once a weekend. We take everyone’s car keys, and we just hang around his house. We usually all get drunk. Now, honestly, I know people who do this all the time, they’re not dying. I know people who are a lot older, also drank casually, no liver problems, etc.

What are the common side effects of doing this? Besides the obvious hangover and “I can’t believe I did that” stuff.

Underage drinking is illegal because historically (like when they changed the drinking age from 21 to 18 in some states) too many teenagers were doing reckless and idiotic things (like drive drunk or get alcohol poisoning) and those individuals got it banned for everyone that age. Raising the age back to 21 is estimated to have saved ~20,000 lives over the last 20 years, mostly through DUI fatality prevention.

If you don’t drive, use fake IDs, or behave in a manner such that others complain about you – probably nothing. The instant you get too noisy, behave obnoxiously, or otherwise behave in such a matter that you attract police attention, expect to get nailed for underage drinking as well as whatever you did to get such attention. And here in California, an underage drinking conviction also equals a one year license suspension.

If you are drinking on a daily basis, you may be at risk of or currently afflicted with alcoholism. And whoever is giving you the booze is also risking legal consequences.

Unless you are drinking every day it really isn’t a big deal. Take it from me, don’t get too wrapped up into drinking because you might be responsible now, but you’ll eventually get more an more comfortable and start driving and going to bigger parties. I used to be a very heavy drinker back in high school and got myself in a lot of trouble.. so just be careful. i have grown bored of drinking, parties adn the people i meet at parties.
