I have not personally experienced an intervention, nor has anyone in my immediate family. In my 12 step meeting though many speakers have referred to their own personal experience with intervention. The general gist of what I have heard involves, being ‘tricked’ into meeting at a relatives home or the family’s home and being greeted by an interventionist. Doors are locked, bodyguards placed at the door (they can be hired, or fellow family members). Family members proceed to read letters expressing their concern over the destruction the abuse has caused- specific heartfelt examples are the usual. Afterwards the abuser is either immediately carted away to rehab after they admit they have a problem or given a few days to assess the intervention and stay under the watchful care of loved ones.
The book Parched by Heather King has a great account of her intervention in the final chapters, fabulous book as well.
