What Do You Think About the Use of Psychedelic Trips for Anxiety Treatment?

Question by Jim: What Do You Think About The Use of Psychedelic Trips For Anxiety Treatment?
Nicky Edlich, 67, began her first-ever trip on a psychedelic drug last year.

She says it has greatly helped her psychotherapeutic treatment for anxiety from her advanced ovarian cancer.

“The world was made up of jewels and I was in a dome,” she recalled. Surrounded by brilliant, kaleidoscopic colors, she saw the dome open up to admit “this most incredible luminescence that made everything even more beautiful.”

Tears trickled down her face as she saw “how beautiful the world could actually be.”

“There’s still a lot of resistance to it,” said David Nichols, a Purdue University professor of medicinal chemistry and president of the Heffter Institute, which is supporting the NYU study. “The whole hippie thing in the 60s” and media coverage at the time “has kind of left a bad taste in the mouth of the public at large.

“When you tell people you’re treating people with psychedelics, the first thing that comes to mind is Day-Glo art and tie-dyed shirts.”

The use of psychedelics is as old as time. You can find it in ancient Egypt, Rome, the Bible, ancient tribes and so on. They were previously used here as well in treating serious illnesses. It is only since “the war on drugs” that such treatments were brought to a halt. We are talking about people who are already dieing and are suffering a great deal. Easing their pain and anxiety should is the humane thing to do. So right now they are simply trying to prove once again how effective this would be and how many people it could help. I’m not saying it should be a free for all. Strict medical use only. The same establishment that is anti hippie, used to drink Coke containing cocaine, and 7-Up containing Lithium. This is all old news.

I think that it’s a crazy idea (pardon the pun). Most patients that are in the state psychiatric hospital have done psychedelic drugs such as lsd, ‘magic mushroom’ and others. Those types of drugs can bring forth severe mental illness such as schizophrenia that was dormant or not as severe. I have anxiety disorders myself including social anxiety, some ptsd, generalized anxiety and ocd (obsessive-compulsive disorder) and the idea of the psychedelic drugs is just frightening. It’s best to steer clear of any of those (and any) types of drugs. What my doctor has prescribed to me for many years is the ssri (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) antidepressant ‘prozac weekly’, the time-released prozac (3x/week due to the ocd), for the anxiety (and clinical depression). Just fyi that serotonin is a neurotransmitter in the brain which is supposed to help nerve cells talk to each other. I also take seroquel which is classified as an antipsychotic but in smaller amounts helps with sleep and anxiety, and it’s believed that the dopamine (another neurotransmitter) is supposed to be affected by those with ocd, too.
