Alcoholism: Questions About Severe Reactions?
Question by PureOrLady: alcoholism: questions about severe reactions?
My sister is an alcoholic/addict who is not currently using needles. I am 46 she is 43. My problem is I believe she may be way over the limit on the alcohol. She “forgot” to tell me she wanted to spend the week-end, did not eat more than a couple bites in 24 hours, drank 2 bottles of wine, and a 6 pack. continually repeated the same phrases–, threw up when she came in (bad food she said) and before she went to sleep as well. She doesn’t remember the back somersaults my daughter was doing that she thought were “so” cute Saturday night. She cannot seem to track a conversation, has had seizures in the last 3 months, Is this protracted alcohol poisoning? Or just too much drinking from an addictive personality after the death of our Mom? Btw–she chose drugs and men over her kids and we might fight at how clingy she is with mine-at 20 the college student is allowed to go out with her boyfriend on Saturday night-regardless of who shows up unannounced. If she chooses to take her aunt home, she leaves again. My 23 year old son doesn’t have to baby her — he’s a marine and laughing it off, but it’s scaring me how she clings to my daughter and I don’t think it’s healthy for either one–since the sister is supplying pot, which can’t be smoked in my house.

Have you tried holding a intervention?
I’m the daughter of alcoholic parents and my dad is a chronic substance abuser (he’s been chemically addicted to marijuana for over 30 years, he suffers withdrawals as bad as a crack addict…literally).
I’ve never seen my dad OD on alcohol (or his body has gotten used to it. He drinks 12L of wine and 2 40’s of vodka a night), but he doesn’t remember what he says when he’s taking hoots, he doesn’t remember what he says 1 1/2 hours before he blacks out. My dad gets violent with me when he’s drunk and under the influence (he starts smoking pot when he wakes up, he has to smoke pot to stay normal).
Your sister sounds like she’s going to bottom out really soon. I would try and sit her down (while sober) and talk to her about whats happening.
The signs of alcohol poisoning are confusion, stupor, vomiting, seizures, slow or irregular breathing, blue-tinged or pale skin, low body temperature (hypothermia), unconsciousness.
If you’re sister has slow or irregular breathing and blue-tinged or pale skin, I’d be very worried about her. If she passes out, you can’t wake her, and she has shallow breathing I’d call a ambulance right away.
