My Father Is a Diabetic Alcoholic?
Question by TrishaB<3: My father is a diabetic alcoholic?
I don’t know what to do. I am a teenager and I don’t know what to do. He is diabetic and it is terrible for his health but he does it anyway. He promises he will stop and then he goes and drinks any way and when I remind him that he promised me he says ‘sorry’ and acts so sad like someone has done something to him and refuses to look at me. It is incredibly frustrating as he can take control of it but he chooses not to. My mother sees this problem and whines about it but she doesn’t seem to be doing anything to stop it and she herself is starting to drink. If she keeps getting drunk she will not be able to make sure my dad doesn’t suffocate at night in bed or have a heart attack. If he gets too drunk he will not be able to administer insulin to himself properly when his blood sugar rockets or plummets. He will refuse treatment for his addiction because he keeps denying it and he believes it is shameful to seek treatment because people will know. He gets so angry at me just at the thought that I may tell people about his drinking. I don’t know what to do. No one listens to me, no one seems to care.
I just want to go to college and be a normal kid without worrying that I will lose him every day.

Dear, please do not feel worry. You should do whatever to persude hime to quit drinking. It is really bad to the control of blood sugar. If blood sugar level is not controlled, it will lead to a myriad of complications, eye disease, kidney disease, heart disease, etc.
Hope I can help. I work in a hospital and glad to give you any useful information. If you have other questions, you can email to [email protected] . I will do my best to help you walk out of this difficult situation.

Here are some other ways that alcohol can affect diabetes:–
* While moderate amounts of alcohol can cause blood sugar to rise, excess alcohol can actually decrease your blood sugar level — sometimes causing it to
drop into dangerous levels.
* Beer and sweet wine contain carbohydrates and may raise blood sugar.
* Alcohol stimulates your appetite, which can cause you to overeat and may affect your blood sugar control.
* Alcohol can interfere with the positive effects of oral diabetes medicines or insulin.
* Alcohol may increase triglyceride levels.
* Alcohol may increase blood pressure.
* Alcohol can cause flushing, nausea, increased heart rate, and slurred speech.
Ask your father to conduct liver function tests (LFT).
