Question by : Can Psychiatrists Do Counseling? Can they also do s exual addiction counseling?
Hi I am a medical student.

I am interested in psychiatry (I’m 33 and to old to go back a get a bachelor’s degree in psychology).
I am interested in counseling patients and not just prescribing medication all the time.

Can psychiatrists do counseling?
I’ve heard they can but that many just prescribe medication so that they can see more patients.
Does anyone know of psychiatrists who do counseling?

I suffered from sexual addiction in my past and was interested in counseling other men.
Can psychiatrists counseling men with sexual addiction?
I read somewhere that they could if they have training under the American Association of Sex Addiction Therapy.

Does anyone have any more information that could shed light on this?

1) you need a PhD in Psychology , plus your MD, to be a Psychiatrist.

2) Psychiatrists can, and should, counsel people. They’re not prescription machines.

3) You do not need to be a psychiatrist to be a counselor.

They absolutely can do therapy/counseling. I consider myself very fortunate to have a psychiatrist that spends 30-40 minutes per session actually working with me instead of solely focused on writing scripts and moving on to the next patient. As you mentioned, there are psychiatrists that don’t utilize their full training, working more in terms of volume than quality. However, this is why many people also get involved with psychologists. A good psychologist can help accomplish things that no pill can.
