Alcoholic father…RELAPSE?!?!?

Question by Cory V: alcoholic father…RELAPSE?!?!?
to make an insanely long story short, my dad has been a MAJOR alcoholic for over 30 years. In August 2007 he went to a detox. So, he’s been sober. He was supposed to go to AA meeting and therapy and he didn’t. So, my worst fear was that he was going to relapse. Well, last night I was him drinking and I have been crying all day. It really makes me wonder how many times he has drank when he was “sober.” And, well, I don’t know if I should tell my mom or tell my therapist and then my mom or….and, well, I guess I don’t really have I question, I just have no one to tell this to and I have to get it out =P

You should go to the meetings available for children of alcoholics ….. that will help you understand the nature of the disease. Call AA and get times and locations of these types of meetings to help you talk to others in your shoes. May God bless you and your family.

if you saw him drinking then i would lightly mention it to your mother but do be accusatory, one time doesnt mean a relapse, it is however the start if it is to happen. Tell your therapist, thats that they are there for. and i have found that one thing that has helped me deal with 2 alcoholic parents, both of whom are in denial, its a group called acoa which stands for adult children of alcoholics. its not just for the children but also for the families and friends of alcoholics. I have learned so much about myself, my feelings and my parents behavior and learned to cope and deal with them and their antics. good luck and i wish the best for your father.
