I’m not sure where you are but in NYC you need a social service program to help with the paper work try calling the doctors office and see if they have a Social Worker that could help you and your niece get the assistance you feel she needs they will asses her and determine her level of functioning which will in turn predict what level of care she requires they will then interview her (she may have to interview with more then one residence) when one of these places excepts her she will have a new home just remember they give priority to the mentally ill who are homeless and/or just being released from the hospital with no place to go so it could be a wait (If she has medicaid or something like it her doctor can put in a request for a home health aide who could come in a few times a week and assist her until arrangements can be made for her to enter a more suitable living situation
If there is no social worker try calling the city information line here in NYC it’s 311 I don’t know if it’s the same everywhere
Keep in mind that I’m speaking from a NY state of mind
It could work differently in other location
Once she’s in a place she will be able to live there as long as needed/wanted if her condition worsen once she’s there and she becomes a danger to herself or others the administrators of the group home may choose not to take her back and then she’d have to wait again for a new placement but if she got better they could move her to a place where she would have less supervision so it all depends on her progress but if it stays pretty much the same she could stay
Also if you have a specific agency or group home in mind call them directly speak with someone in the admissions office and they will give you a clear picture of what you need to do to apply for placement sometimes they empathize with your situation and can help put you on a fast track to a solution
Good Luck to the both of you
If you haven’t heard it lately Thank You
