How Is “to Kill a Mockingbird” Associated With Mental Illness?

Question by Shmoo: How is “To Kill a Mockingbird” associated with Mental Illness?
I am doing a research report on To Kill a Mockingbird and my topic is “Mental illness.” I’m not really sure what I am doing but I have to make electronic note cards on each source I use. So please list your sources.

They cannot be anything like Wikipedia or a blog. It has to be legitimate.
Also, our class has only gotten through the first half of the book. Is there more information later on? Should I just finish the book now and then do my sources?

Its a fantastic story and alot of illness issues are risen. Good luck but do read the book, atleast then your answers are your own insights and not someone elses!

Can Anybody Tell Me if This Is Fact or Just Lies?

Question by : Can anybody tell me if this is fact or just lies?
Perhaps the most disturbing aspect of the Watchtower world is the deliberate
tolerance of sexual predators within “Jehovah’s organization”. Despite their denial,
Jehovah’s Witnesses are trapped in an organization which tolerates disgusting and
deplorable behavior. I’d like to introduce myself before we start discussing this issue
of pedophilia that is rampant amongst the religious group known as Jehovah’s
Witnesses. My name is Mark H. Palo and I am a former Jehovah’s Witness of almost
forty years. Twice I have been a victim of pedophile molestations at the hands of two
different Jehovah’s Witnesses. I was between the age of ten and twelve years old. My
molesters where never caught or punished. Presently I am fifty-seven years old and
hold an associates degree in Human Services and am attending The University of
Massachusetts, Lowell, majoring in psycho/sociology. I hold a 3.8 GPA and hold
high honors by being accepted into the Phi Theta Kappa Society. At this time I work
at a Substance Abuse Clinic as a Consumer Advocate. My job is to see that all the
clients are given fair and timely treatment. I handle client issues, concerns, and work
to attain their city, state and federal benefits. I also work with the elderly population
of my city to educate them with regards to the dangers of misuse of prescription
drugs, alcohol, and OTC drugs. I run seminars at schools, colleges, and elderly
housing sites. The most accurate description of pedophilia can be found by turning
to the Diagnostic And Statistical Manual Of Mental Disorders, better known as the
DSM. This publication is the virtual Bible that is used by all Therapists,
Psychologists, and Psychiatrists in the United States and abroad. (DSM-V ,p527,
sec.302.2) Pedophilia:

What Addictions Does the APA Recognize as Actual Addiction Disorders?

Question by Michael Brian: What addictions does the APA recognize as actual addiction disorders?
I know technically anything can be an “addiction” but I’m trying to find a list that the APA has put out that lists the actual addictions someone can be diagnosed with.

Depends on what you count as an addiction. The DSM-IV (current edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) doesn’t have a definition for the word “addiction” and doesn’t use it.

As far as what *you* might classify as an “addiction”, you can be diagnosed with either Substance Abuse or Substance Dependence, depending on the severity of the addiction. This involves either the dependence on or abuse of substances, like alcohol, heroin, caffeine –yes, I said caffeine–, cocaine, nicotine, etc.

Is It a Spiritual Problem When There Is an Addiction?

Question by ms kay: Is it a spiritual problem when there is an addiction?
Do you think that addiction is a spiritual problem? I mean when you look at record of the rehabilitation centers and the many people who suffer relapse and recidivism. Don’t you think that a “Divine Intervention” is in order?

In a sense, yes, it is a spiritual problem that ends up being a physical problem. Divine Intervention can be forth coming, but you need to do your part first: stop the drinking, go through detox and go through a 12-step program.

“Internet Addictions” – a Real Medical Menace?” What Do You Think?

Question by Hunny Bunny: “Internet Addictions” – A Real Medical Menace?” What do you think?
“Alcohol, drugs, food, sex, and even shopping are all candidates for medical treatment and are recognized as genuine mental disorders, so what about the Internet? Internet addiction -defined as “excessive gaming, sexual pre-occupations, and email/text messaging” – is becoming so common that at least one psychiatrist says it merits inclusion in psychiatry’s official handbook of mental illness, the “Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.”

Dr. Jerald Block of the Oregon Health and Science University is the latest voice pushing for this inclusion, noting that tech junkies display genuinely debilitating behavior, including drug-like cravings, withdrawal, and a constant need for more and better gear – just like a substance addict might exhibit.”
