Well, an interesting point is that hospitals (in the US) are expected to communicate in patients’ native language if they do not speak English. I’m not sure if this is state or federal law but you could probably look it up. A discussion on the pros and cons of this would be interesting. In one setting where I worked we had to either have a translator or use a telephone-based translation service (at the hospital’s expense, of course).
Edit- here’s another idea: I’m always baffled about the emphasis on “women’s health” when men do worse than women on almost all health and other social outcomes (life expectancy, rates of heart disease, cancer and most other diseases, substance abuse, risk of injury- deliberate and accidental- educational attainment, and much more) due to women’s health being politically correct and men’s health not so. Groups even twist the statistics around to make it look like women are worse off when this is not the case; for example, groups will stress that more women have heart disease than men- it is because women live longer! You have to look at rates of disease adjusted for age- then you will see the risk is much higher for men. There are some real issues (symptoms are different in women and often unrecognized) but these are buried in statistical manipulation.
