What Do You Do When a Parent Has a Gambling Problem?
Question by Samski: what do you do when a parent has a gambling problem?
My mom has a gambling problem. She’s had it my whole life, my grandmother had one too. She hides it well, so I just found out about it this year. Her boyfriend started reading her bills and figured it out, and told me. He pays all of our bills, all of my college tuition has been taken out in loans, and my mom has emptied out any savings accounts or mutual funds I had as a child. Neither her boyfriend or I have seen any of her money go anywhere productive, and I’m working two jobs to try to save for my tuition next year. We both love her and want to confront her but we don’t want to lose her. If she leaves him, I’m not sure what will happen to us. She can’t afford to live on her own. And we can’t afford for her to keep losing her money and ours. Any ideas on how to approach this touchy subject with her?

The best thing to do is to have both of you sit her down and talk to her at once….If she really cares about her family then she will listen and hopefully get help soon….Before you guys talk to her though make sure you have numbers of gambling hot lines or some kind of treatment facility so that if she is willing then you can start immediately. It possibly could even help if you called one of those numbers and asked them this same question and they could give you tips on what to say.
