What Is the Best Drug-Free Workplace Policy?
Question by thebossman: What is the best Drug-Free Workplace Policy?
I have an employee that I suspect of drug use. This staffer has come to work several times with pupils the size of dimes with higher than normal energy. (Not necessarily bad behavior in itself). Recently this employee took some “vitamins” (employee’s word) at work and 20 minutes later had those dime sized pupils again. I immediately suspected Exstacy (MDMA). The next morning the employee comes in very tired claiming feeling somewhat ill, stating that he/she doesn’t feel like being at work; another sign of “coming down”. I also believe in personal privacy. I don’t have a policy in place for random work-place drug-testing, preferring to discuss one-on-one any performance related issues. I personally feel like I’d want to have my boss take me aside and address any suspicions personally before handing me a piece of paper to get a drug-test. Maybe there IS a reasonable explanation. Do I implement a “Random drug-testing policy”, a “Drug-test upon Suspicion policy”, or do I have a discussion?
