What’s the Best Way or Technique to Find Low Priced Apartments in Any City, State You Want?
Question by leoarce27: What’s the best way or technique to find low priced apartments in any city, state you want?
Hopefully you don’t say with realtors. I meant a good website that lists many choices, or does one just need to do the leg work and drive and walk around?

Initially, read the classified ads in the newspapers for the city you want to move to. This will give you a general idea of the types of apartments (if any, not all cities/towns have apartment complexes), rental rates and length of leases if any. I like the Chamber of Commerce only to determine if there are property management companies in their membership. If so, it’s more than likely there are ample rentals to make them profitable. A Good Sign.
Next you can check the Dex or Yellow Pages general alphabetic listing for ‘apartments, condos or multifamily housing”. This will only tell you if there are any in the area you are considering, but not for how much or which areas are good or bad. For that, it’s the police department.
Most police departments have a community liaison or communications department that gives an overview of which neighborhoods are giving them the most problems. Some even have a neighborhood breakdown by the types of crimes you are most likely to find, and whether it’s more homeowners or renters.
This will give you a place to start, and I would do all 3 to get a better feel for a place before doing my “on the ground” legwork. Last thing you want is to find out after you’ve signed a lease that Henrietta Hooker or Meth-Head Larry are your next door neighbors. It happens in all kinds of neighborhoods, but at least you can make a better decision based on facts and not guessing.
