Convenience in medical care, meals and personal care assistance. No upkeep of home/lawn, etc. Basically comes down to convenience.

Yona, very few choose it on their own. Most have family, doctors, or social workers who lean on them because they believe the elder is no longer able to take proper care of himself or herself.
Typical problems might be that they’re forgetful about taking medications, or confused about what to take when. That can lead to death. Or they’re unable to get around easily or have balance issues but insist on going to the basement with the laundry, or standing on a stepstool to change a light bulb, because they always have. A fall can be life-threatening.
Other signs are increasing isolation, especially if they can no longer drive, inability to buy and prepare healthy meals, and depression.
All of these problems can be greatly eased with assisted living, where the resident is encouraged to do all s/he can do for himself or herself, and staff fills in the gaps.
I figure when our kids tell me that’s where I should be, I’ll go without much argument.
