Why Do We Misrepresent the Case With All This Talk of Abstinence Only Education ?

Question by Jerry: Why do we misrepresent the case with all this talk of abstinence only education ?
I think that one of our biggest problems with kids stds and pregnancy is that we place emphasis in the wrong place.

I.E. there are always reports on “abstinence only programs” but what we fail to notice is that, teaching “everything except abstinence” is being equally ignorant.

Seriously, I remember my sex-ed classes consisted of long discussions on all the types of contraceptives, and only at the end of the class would the teacher mention that abstinence is an option.

There are those that are always quick to argue that “abstinence only” denies the children knowledge, yet refuse to even include abstinence in their sex-ed curriculum.

Shouldn’t the aim of middle and hgh school education be to teach responsibility.

We need to first let them know that abstinence IS an option and that there is nothing “bad” about being abstinent until one has reached a responsible age. Being abstinent doesn’t mean being a bible thumping christian.

Let them know clearly all the risks involved in teenage sex, and let them know that contraceptives, do not make you impervious to harm.

We need to get off this message that abstinence is only for the bible thumping christians; and let the children know that abstinence IS an option too.

Okay, then you represent the education without the talk of abstinence and see the difference for yourself.

You are correct. The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy says BOTH abstinence and contraceptive must be taught for best results.

Although I agree with religious conservatives who want to challenge the youth to delay sexual activity for a while, I totally disagree with their message that a condom is a provision for sin. I send my Christian friends to the website below which debunks the whole thing against premarital sex in the Bible. That way they have no excuse not to support comprehensive sex education.
