Why Is My Acne Still So Bad?!?

Question by Kyle: Why is my acne still so bad?!?
Ok so I started to get acne in 8th grade and it wasn’t that bad so I didn’t pay much attention to it. But once I started my freshmen year it started to get worse so I went to the drugstore and bought some exfoliant cleansers and some astringent pads and it was still getting worse and worse! So I went to my local dermatologist and he gave me a pill which I had to take twice a day. A cleanser for morning and night and in the mornings I had to put on a clear topical cream and at night I had to out on a .5 retinoid cream and lastly I had to use a moisturizer afterwards. I also go to an acne surgeon to get a chemical peel and extractions once a month and it’s still getting worse. Can someone please tell me what I need to do or what I’m doing wrong. I really need your guys help. My self esteem is as low as it gets and its ruining my years at highschool
I’m only 15!

Only time can heal it.. The next step would probably be accutane. It’s hell. And has a lot of side effects but works like a charm from what I’ve heard. I’m goin into ninth grade and have had acne since I was in sixth grade. I’m finally getting accutane next Monday.

Everybody is different when it comes to acne. What works for one person may not work for you. It sounds to me like most of your problems are gene-based. But, there are certain things you can do to hinder acne. For example, eating healthy, exercising and cutting sugars from your diet can help immensely (I have a friend who swears their acne disappeared when they stopped drinking soda regularly).

If worse comes to worse, talk to your dermatologist about accutane. It’s essentially like setting off a nuclear bomb in your system, and is the only “cure” for acne. It does, however, require monthly blood testing because it can damage your liver. But, my sister’s boyfriend uses it because he has severe boils, and he says it is helping immensely.
