How to Force Someone With Mental Health Issues Into Treatment?

Question by Mike Stankiewicz: How to force someone with mental health issues into treatment?
I believe a close friend of mine may be suffering from schizophrenia. She doesn’t believe anything is wrong, but is on the verge of losing her two children permanently. She is currently involved with social services, but they are treating it as a substance abuse problem. I need to know what can be done. She is of age, and refuses treatment. She lives in the state of Ohio, Cuyahoga County. More information can be provided if needed. Please anyone with any insight, it would be of great help.

My brother is paranoid schizophrenic. He’s had problems for years. My mother & I have good to the court house numerous times to get a court order to have him held under observation. You’ll have to feel out an affadavit & state the problems she’s having. In order for them, to hospitalize her, the court will have to believe she’s a danger to herself and/or others. The only thing is, she’ll be able to see everything you wrote down & who wrote it. You’ll have to be prepared for this. There is no guarantee they’ll keep her after her hold is up esp. if she’s one of thoses that can “keep it together” for a few days. I suggest, if she is hospitalized, you visit her & show that you care.
P.S. I think you’re a great friend to try & help…stay strong=)

You cant force someone to go to treatment, all you can do is suggest to the person that they may loose the children and why they might loose them. If she is a normal mother she will do something about her condition, if she is a drug addict as the CPS thinks then she will loosed them.

If you are in the USA and she is really acting out, is a danger to herself or the kids call the police.
